THE SMOKING NUNS & ( Power Animals)
b & d- our good friend ryan found an amazing shop in san francisco called artillery apparel gallery. the artist ivan creates specially commissioned artwork, including hand-painted t-shirts depicting an individual's power animal. here are our choices, enjoy!
ryan- my power animal used to be a tiger, but now it’s a lion. i’m a leo, but it’s not about that. it’s about being calmer, wiser, and more creative. it’s about realizing the value of community and connection. it’s about having great hair. according to the internet, "lion people need to understand that one's well-being is based on living and working in harmony with others, without giving up one's individuality." rawr.
b- i went to research online what having a sloth for a power animal meant. the only thing i found was this:"no one will every tell you their "[power] animal" is the wombat, the hedgehog, or the three-toed sloth."well i suppose i'll make my own meaning... i identify with sloths because of their love of sleep and hanging out in trees. we are also both primarily vegetarians.
d- there is a storage facility somewhere out there filled with boxes of my childhood toys and memorabilia, and each item has a frog motif or reference. when i was about eight years old i began my obsession with frogs. i can't remember why i loved frogs so much, but man was i dedicated. so when ry asked for my power animal all i could think of was the frog. research shows that a frog is a symbol of healing, cleansing, and rebirth. that's all lovely, but for me, the frog represents a time of joy and innocence. nothing is more powerful than happy childhood memories.

Upon stepping into Artillery Apparel Gallery,
you're immediately faced with a huge, gold framed easel, holding a
t-shirt, stretched like canvas, in various stages of painting. This is
no upright screen-print job, but rather, hand-painted t-shirts by
Artillery AG's owner, Ivan Lopez.
Lopez is straight up, born-and-bred Mission hip. After studying Industrial Design at Pratt and selling his shirts on street corners in NYC, he returned to SF and open Artillery AG right in his hometown hood -- the Mission.
Artillery AG opened in 2009 with 7 local artisans and now features over 40 of the Bay Areas best designers, taking over 70% of the store's merchandise. Lopez says he wanted a concrete, creative environment to promote independent art and design. The stores features North Beach's Indie Industries, Nicacelly reconstructed women's apparel, Platinum Dirt leather clutch bags, and elegant silver jewelry by Maria Engracia.
Headlining all of the merch is Lopez' signature painted t-shirts. Lopez hand-paints each shirt right in the store, with his special blend of acrylic and fabric medium. The shirts are then heat-pressed to lock in the lively designs, ranging from kitschy ice cream cones to vibrant animals. The shirts start at $35, with custom work available, starting at $45.
The best part? Great art is always a great excuse to party. Artillery AG throws a big, "Art Is Good For You", art show every two months. This Saturday, join in on the festivities and check out SF artist, Shawn Ray Harris' 3-D photography. This show will feature a series of photographs shot on Harris' home-built camera, exclusively for Artillery AG.
Shawn Ray Harris at Artillery AG (2751 Mission St.), Saturday Feb 5 - April 1. Opening reception Feb 5 from 7:30pm - 11pm, featuring live music.

Mission Icon Video. Levis Workshop
For two months this summer, Levi's is organizing a print resource center and creative studio space in San Francisco's Mission District. Levi's is collaborating with bay-area pioneers to celebrate the important work of community groups and non-profit organizations. In partnership with Plaza Adelante, the Levi's Workshop is hosting a small exhibition curated by Rene and Rio Yañez. Much of the work shown in this exhibition will be created in the print shop. The theme of the exhibition is "Mission Icons in a Time of Change" and the hope is that this will be an opportunity to reflect on the changing nature of The Mission and the immigrant communities served by the organizations at Plaza Adelante.

Local artist Ivan Lopez works on Artillery Gallery’s signature item, a t-shirt with good locally source art. Down to earth cutie pie Alexa looks on. They are located between 23rd and 24th on Mission Street. They carry men’s and women’s clothes, shoes, and accessories. It’s a hipster twist with an urbanwear heart, and muy precioso. Habla espanol. Aldo works at artillery gallery, mentioned above. He takes in his pants to fit his beautiful skinny legs. He is an interesting blend of urban, Latin, and hipster fashion, with a very elegant and very gay sensibility. We like him.
Alexa’s in the background wearing the basics, medium waisted tight black jeans and a tight white v-neck. Woman after my own heart, weeks have passed when I wore nothing else.

With help from his parents, Ivan Lopez, who attended the Pratt Institute in New York but grew up in the Mission District, opened Artillery Apparel Gallery at 2751 Mission St. four weeks ago. He recently hosted the store’s grand opening this week and MISSION EYES was there. Mission Local |
