Pit Fire &
Community Gratitude Altar with a Potluck
Experience the transformative power of fire as you solidify your ceramic pieces through the ancient art of pit firing!
Day One: Creating Vessels
Date: Saturday, October 18th
Time: 11 AM - 2 PM
Location: Artillery Ceramics, 2751 Mission St.
Join local ceramic artist Gabriela “gabi” Montufar for this pit fire workshop. In this preparatory session, Gabi will guide participants through the process of creating vessels for pit firing. We will discuss the best forms to make and how to prepare your vessels using techniques such as terra sigillata and burnishing. This session will equip you with the skills needed for a successful firing day.
Day Two: Firing Day + Community Gratitude Altar with Potluck
Date: Saturday, November 1st
Time: 10 AM – 4 PM
Location: Artillery Ceramics, 2751 Mission St.
We’ll gather at 10 AM to prepare our vessels and begin the pit firing, with the day concluding when the fire burns down and the pots are ready to be retrieved. Your vessels will be pre bisque fired and ready for pit fire day.
As part of our celebration, we’ll create a Community Gratitude Altar, where you can express thanks through offerings such as flowers, seeds, plants, or through words, songs, or poems.
Potluck: We invite you to bring a dish that celebrates your favorite foods. Share a food item that represents your love, heritage, and contributes to a diverse and vibrant potluck.
What to Bring:
Organic Materials: Any organic materials that are completely dried. Coffee grounds, eggshells, tea leaves, banana peels, etc.
Potluck Dish: (optional) A special dish celebrating your favorite food. If not, make sure to bring a meal, there is also delicious food in the mission. Let’s keep it as plastic free as possible, we have utensils, knives, cups, and some plates in the studio.
Personal Offerings: Items for the Gratitude Altar if you wish to contribute. Flowers, seeds, candles, songs, poems, etc.
Notes:
The firing schedule may vary, so be prepared for flexibility.
Ensure your potluck dish is easy to share.
We will keep posted if weather does not permit for this activity & will re -schedule. For example, fires or rain.
Join us for a day of artistic exploration through learning about firing and community bonding as we honor Latinx Heritage Month and express our collective gratitude. We look forward to seeing you at the studio!
