Wild Clay Harvesting Workshop
This month, we took our studio practice out into nature for a truly grounding experience hosted by Artist Mayari bicolana + batangueña𖤓 earth alchemist ☽ @mayari.sol
During our Wild Clay Harvesting Workshop; over the course of three hours, participants learned how to forage clay directly from a local beach, connect with the land, and sculpt in the open air.
🌿 The Process
We began with a grounding alter making ceremony where participants offered an offering to the earth followed with a short hike, where the group was guided to a special beach site rich in wild clay. From there, participants learned how to identify and collect their own clay directly from the source and cultivated the material to be buildable clay and from there discovered firsthand the textures, colors, and qualities of raw earth. It was a rare chance to see the origins of the material we usually only encounter in the studio processed and ready. and to process and create with the clay harvested next to a bonfire along side the beach.
☀️ The Experience
The rest of the day unfolded on the shoreline, with sunshine and ocean breezes setting the scene for sculpting and being in community. People of all levels shaped their pieces directly from the clay they had just gathered, creating one-of-a-kind works that carried both personal and ecological meaning. The energy was unhurried, connected, and deeply tied to earth and peace.
✨ The Impact
Working with wild clay and learning how to identify it highlighted the intimate relationship between art and environment. Participants walked away with more than just handmade sculptures—they gained an appreciation for the landscapes that provide the raw materials, and a deeper understanding of sustainability in ceramics.
💛 Gratitude
Thank you to everyone who joined us in the field and at the shore. Each sculpture created was more than an artwork—it was a reminder of our connection to the land beneath our feet and the ocean by our side. We can’t wait to host more outdoor workshops that bring together clay, community, and care for the Earth.
